Career and life education happens across the institution. The Career and Life Design Center is dedicated to cultivating a career ecosystem at UCM that empowers students and alumni to design meaningful lives and careers. Faculty and staff are essential partners in this work, helping embed career readiness and life design principles into curriculum and co-curricular experiences, students bridge classroom learning with professional skills and real-world opportunities. Through program collaborations, employer and industry insights, we can collectively support students and alumni as they build the confidence and capacity to thrive in an ever-changing world of work.
UCM Career Events and Fairs are invaluable opportunities for our students to launch their professional lives, secure competitive internships, and build lasting networks. As faculty and staff, your voices are influential in driving student engagement and career readiness. We invite you to partner with the Career and Life Design Center to make this year’s events a success.
Here is how you and your department can actively participate:
- Encourage Student Attendance: promote upcoming events and fairs in your courses, share them during advising sessions, or consider incorporating them into your syllabus or offering extra credit. Fairs are highly beneficial for both undergraduate and graduate students.
- Market Your Department or Program: Did you know your academic department, college, or specialized area can host a table? Register as an “employer” participant to market your programs or internal student employment opportunities directly to attendees.
- Network as an Event-Goer: We welcome faculty and staff to walk the floor! Attend the fairs to connect directly with regional and national employers, discover evolving industry trends, and build partnerships that can enrich your curriculum.

Courtesy Handshake Account
As a UCM faculty member, we invite you to create your very own Handshake account. This recruiting tool will allow you to stay up-to-date with what your students see. This includes job postings, event details and access to the employer directory, as well as the ability to search for off-campus work-study, part-time, internships, and full-time opportunities.
Register for your account. When prompted to select the type of an account, choose “Student”. Please note that by registering for an account, you are agreeing to the Handshake Courtesy Account User Agreement.

Submit a Partnership Request
If you are interested in partnering with the Career and Life Design Center, please take a moment to complete our Partnership Request Form. Our staff will follow up to finalize the details of your request.
Please fill out this form if:
- You’d like a Career & Life Design staff member to record a presentation for your virtual course or provide a campus presentation or customized presentation not included among our standard offerings.
- You’d like a Career & Life Design W.I.S.E. Coach to present to your in-person class or student organization, or host an information table at your campus event.
- You’d like your class or student organization to utilize the Professional Clothing Studio.
- You’d like to embed an assignment in your class, utilizing our Walk-In Studio Experience (W.I.S.E).
When requesting a partnership with our office, please keep in mind that we require at least two weeks notice from the date of the request to effectively prepare materials and coordinate staffing.
Career Outcomes
Each year, the Career and Life Design Center collects data from UCM graduates regarding their primary post-graduation status. The Graduate Follow-Up Survey collects information designed to capture initial career outcomes for students 6 months after receiving their degree, using guidelines set by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
For-Credit Elective Courses
Our 1- and 2-credit 8-week elective courses, Career Readiness (UNIV 3000) and Life Design (UNIV 3100), offer students practical tools to prepare for their future careers and personal growth. Whether building a career readiness plan or using life design to navigate and explore life decisions, these online and in-person classes support students in making intentional choices during and after their time at UCM.

The Career and Life Design Center is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). NACE provides information to faculty on the ethical and legal standards of student hiring.
As a faculty member, you can support the career aspirations of your students and graduates and complement the work of career services offices on your campus. Unfortunately, helping students in their job and internship searches can sometimes raise unanticipated legal or ethical issues, especially when you are asked for student referrals. This short guide is intended to provide you with guidance in areas that you may encounter in this regard.
